EMERGENCY MENTAL HEALTH CARE WORKER & DJ GIVES US HIS WELLBEING HINTS

WHEN EUEY DEE IS NOT HITTING DJ DECKS HE WORKS IN AN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT WITH THE MENTAL HEALTH TEAM.  HE COMPLETED A DOCTORATE ON RISK ASSESSMENT DURING THIS TIME AND HAS NOTICED THERE ARE A NUMBER OF FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO MENTAL HEALTH RISK THAT ARE WORTH CONSIDERING.

1/ AVOID SUBSTANCES:  ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGS ARE REALLY TEMPTING WHEN EXPERIENCING A CRISIS OR LOW MOOD.  SUBSTANCES CAN SEEM LIKE A REALLY GREAT SHORT-TERM SOLUTION, BUT BEYOND THAT IN INTERFERES WITH EFFECTIVE TREATMENT AND ALSO LEADS TO DANGEROUS IMPULSIVE BEHAVIORS.  TRY TO MINIMIZE SUBSTANCE USE AND LOOK AT THE PLETHORA OF WEBSITES THAT CAN HELP YOU.

2/ YOU ARE NOT ALONE:  YOU MAY FEEL IT.  YOU MAY HAVE FEW SUPPORTS.  BUT THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT YOU AND YOUR LIFE.  THIS MAY BE A FRIEND, A FAMILY OR CARER, OR A PROFESSIONAL ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PHONE, ANY TIME OF THE DAY OR NIGHT.

3/ TALK TO SOMEONE:  IT CAN BE HARD BUT PLEASE SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP IF LOW MOOD CONTINUES OR WORSENS.  THERE ARE A RANGE OF SUCCESSFUL TALKING, SOCIAL, AND MEDICAL ADVANCES THAT CAN MINIMIZE YOUR DISTRESS AND PROMOTE WELLNESS.  IT CAN START WITH A HELPLINE PHONE CALL OR A VISIT TO YOUR DOCTOR.

4/ TREAT SUICIDAL THOUGHTS SERIOUSLY:  IF YOU HAVE THEM, OR SOMEONE DISCLOSES THEM, SEEK PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT.  HAVE A SAFETY PLAN IN PLACE IN CASE YOU EVER NEED.  THIS CAN INCLUDE DOING THANGS THAT RELIEVE YOUR DISTRESS, TO ACTIVATING SUPPORT WHEN YOU ARE FEELING AT RISK.

5/ IT IS NOT FOREVER: LOW MOOD CAN BE FLEETING OR ENDURING.  FOR THOSE THAT FIND THEMSELVES IN DISTRESS DUE TO A SUDDEN INCIDENT, THE DISTRESS IS LIKELY TO EASE.  FOR THOSE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED LONGER-TERM DISTRESS OR DEPRESSION, REMEMBER THERE ARE USUALLY GOOD AND BAD DAYS.

6/ STAY HEALTHY:  DO WHAT YOU CAN TO EAT WELL AND EXERCISE.  STAY AS SOCIAL AS POSSIBLE AND MAINTAIN CONNECTIONS WHERE YOU CAN.  CONSIDER ANY GROUPS (WALKING GROUPS, OTHER ACTIVITIES YOU ENJOY) YOU CAN ENGAGE WITH.  BEING PHYSICALLY WELL AND CONNECTED MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER.
